Scientific Method
A method of research in which a problem is identified, relevant data are gathered, a hypothesis is formulated from these data, and the hypothesis is tested.
Hypothesis
A possible explanation for observations that relate to a scientific question; must be testable.
Observation
Using one or more of the five senses to gather information.
Inference
A logical interpretation based on observation and prior knowledge.
Variable
Any factor that can change in an exsperiment.
Manipulated Variable
The one factor that a scientist changes in an experiment; also called an independent variable.
Responding Variable
The factor that changes as a result of changes to manipulated, or independent , variables in an experiment; also called dependent variables.
Controlled Experiment
An experiment in which all variables except one are kept constant.
Predicting
Making an inference about a future event based on current evidence or past experience.
Classifying
Grouping together items that are alike in some way.
Communicating
The process of sharing ideas and information with other people.
