Science Unit 3 Test Flashcards
What are the principles of KMT?
Matter is made of particles, particles are always moving, and speed and space between particles changes depending on the state of matter.
What do the particles look like in solids?
The particles are tightly packed and move by vibration in place. Solids have a definite shape and volume and the particles contain the least amount of energy.
What do the particles look like in liquids?
Particles in a liquid have more freedom to move and can slide past each other but liquids have a definite volume and indefinite shape.
What do particles look like in gas?
Particles in gas have high energy and are spread apart. They move freely and rapidly in all directions with no definite shape or volume, filling up any space available.
What do the particles look like in plasma?
They are the furthest apart and move the fastest, with ions having the ability to conduct electricity and respond to magnetic fields.
What is freezing?
Liquid to solid
What is melting?
Solid to liquid
What is ionization?
Gas to plasma
What is sublimation?
Solid to gas
What is deposition?
Gas to solid
What is condensation?
Gas to liquid
What is evaporation?
Liquid to gas
What are elements?
An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means, only made out of one kind of atom
What are compounds?
Compounds are when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together.
What are molecules?
A molecule is a pure substance formed when two elements of the same atom are chemically combined together.
What is a mixture?
Mixtures consist two or more substances that are combined physically, not chemically.
Homogenous mixture?
A uniform composition of compounds or elements where individual components are not easily distinguishable.
Heterogenous mixture?
A heterogenous mixture is a grouping of different non chemically combined compounds and elements that is not uniform and easily seen as separate components.
Tweezing?
Method of physical separation by using tweezers to remove large pieces in a mixture.
Filtration?
A method used to separate mixtures in which some of the particles are large enough in size to be captured with a porous material while others are not.
Distillation?
A purification process in which the components of a liquid are vaporized, then condensed and isolated.
Evaporation?
Used to isolate dissolved solids from liquids.
Magnetism
Using a magnet to separate matter that is magnetic.
