Science Unit 3 2 Flashcards
Give an example of a specific organism and the niche that it occupies
An example can be a mountain lion that lives in caves or crevices in rocky hills. The mountain lion searches for game
Why are niches significant?
because they are unique for a particular animal.
What do abiotic factors contribute to the ecosystem?
Abiotic factors are the physical parts of an ecosystem and include things such as light air wate and soil.
What might lead a physical factor such as soil to change over time?
Soil may change due to weathering erosion human disturbances or other natural events.
How can a change in an abiotic factor impact biotic components of an ecosystem?
A change in temperature for can lead to extinction of a certain species
Describe why a change in climate may impact both biotic and abiotic aspects of the environment
warming temperatures impacts abiotic factors such as soil and sunlight as well as impacting the living things
What is nitrogen fixation?
the changing of atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen compounds that plants can use
How does carbon dioxide enter the atmosphere?
as a by-product of cellular respiration
Compare and contrast the processes of photosynthesis and chemosynthesis
Photosynthesis and chemosynthesis are both processes that result in the production of energy for an organism. They differ however in how this energy is derived. In photosynthesis energy is generated by primary producers which trap sunlight energy and convert carbon dioxide and water to glucose and oxygen. In chemosynthesis organisms use energy rich compounds such as sulfur to generate energy which is then passed up the food chain.
What organisms are found at the base of the food chain? Which are found at the top and why?
the base should begin with a producer. A producer uses photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. The arrow should then lead to a primary consumer that eats only plants. Omnivore is at top.
