Science Unit 3 1 Flashcards
What is the study of ecology?
The study of how organisms interact with their environment
How are biomes related to ecosystems?
Biomes are large regions of the world that can contain many different ecosystems within them
Why are biotic and abiotic factors important to ecosystems?
Since living things rely on both biotic and abiotic factors in the environment removing one of these things can upset ecosystem.
What would happen if even one of these factors was removed from an ecosystem?
If a certain plant was removed from an ecosystem the entire food chain that is based on this primary producer may collapse
Describe how the sun is the main source of energy for the environment
The process of photosynthesis helps plants convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates which plants can use to live and grow. Plants form the base of food chains and animals consume plants
What three things make up the biosphere?
the top portion of the crust. Surface water. Earth’s atmosphere
What is an ecosystem?
all living organisms and nonliving features of an area
What is population density?
the size of a population that occupies a specific area
How are limiting factors related to carrying capacity?
Carrying capacity exists because of limiting factors. A shortage of one or more things limits population size.
Explain the interaction between producers consumers and decomposers in an ecosystem
Producers consumers and decomposers all interact in a food chain or food web in an ecosystem
