Science unit 1 Flashcards
What is symbiosis
Symbiosis is when two different species are in a relationship for an extended period of time.
What is Parasitism?
Parasitism is when two different species are in a relationship for an extended period of time and one partner benefits from the relationship well the other is harmed
What is an example of Parasitism?
Tapeworm and Human
What is Mutualism?
Mutualism is when two different species are in a relationship for an extended period of time and both partners benefit from the relationship.
What is an example of Mutualism?
Flowers and Bees
What is Commensalism?
Commensalism is when two different species are in a relationship for an extended period of time and one partner benefits from the relationship well the other is not harmed nor does it benefit.
What is an example of Commensalism?
Orchids and Trees
What is an Adaptation?
An adaptation is something an organism inherits from their parents, it is not a learned behaviour, its something that is passed down through generations like a Rabbits fur turning white during winter so it lends in with its surroundings.
What is a habitat?
A habitat is the home of an animal
What is a tapeworm?
A tapeworm is a parasite that enters the human body by that person eating undercooked meat. Once the tapeworm enters the human body it creates a parasitism relationship with that person.
What is a human need?
A human need is something that a person needs to survive, they cant live without it, like water or food
What is a human want?
A human want is something that makes life more comfortable for a person, they do not need it to survive like a phone or car.
What is a predator?
A predator is an organism that preys on other organisms, an example of this would be a wolf, which hunts others for food.
What is a prey?
A prey is an organism that is preyed on by another organism, it is hunted and killed for food. An example of this is a rabbit, which is preyed on and killed by another animal.
What is biotic?
Biotic is when something is alive, it needs everything a living being needs, food, water, etc
What is abiotic?
Abiotic is when something is non-living, It doesn’t exchange gasses, it doesn’t need .food or water, etc
What is a producer?
A producer is an organism that can make (produce) its own food. It does not need to hunt or eat other organisms.
What kind of animal breaks down dead animal waste materials?
A decomposer breaks down dead animal waste , they break it down and allow the nutrients from the dead animal to enter back into the ecosystem (into the soil)
What is primary succession?
Primary succession is when an ecosystem begins in a barren spot, like a place with lots of rocks and low nutrients in the soil, Lichen and moss break down these rocks and allow nutrients to enter the soil and small organisms and plants start to enter the ecosystem and the ecosystem grows and grows until it is a fully grown ecosystem.
What is Secondary succession?
Secondary succession is when an ecosystem rebuilds after it has been disturbed (ex. Forest fire)
Name all the parts of the water cycle
Evaporation, Transpiration, Condensation, Precipitation, Surface run-off, Infiltration, and Ground water
What is evaporation
Evaporation is when liquid water turns in water vapor and enters the atmosphere.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is when water evaporates straight off of plant leaves.
What is condensation?
Condensation is when water vapor turns into a liquid in the atmosphere and creates clouds, dew, fog, etc.
What is precipitation?
Precipitation is when water falls back to earth in the form of snow, rain, sleet, hail, etc.
What is surface run-off?
Surface run-off is when water runs off the surface of the ground and forms into rivers, lakes, ponds, etc
What is infiltration?
Infiltration is when water soaks into the ground.
What is Ground water?
Ground water is water that is underground, it forms into springs, etc
What do all living things need?
All living things need a habitat, food, water, and exchanges of gasses .
What is bioaccumulation?
Bioaccumulation is when pollutants enter a food web in higher level consumers
What is ecosystem monitoring?
Ecosystem monitoring is when scientists check the conditions of an ecosystem and the organisms that live in it.
