Science Unit 1 Flashcards
What is a solid?
A solid is one of the three states of matter, has mass and is made up of atoms.
What is a liquid?
A liquid is one of the three states of matter, has mass, volume and is made up of atoms.
What is a gas?
A gas is one of three states of matter, has mass and takes up space it also has no fixed shape.
What is matter?
Matter is anything that has mass, volume and takes up space, matter is made up of atoms and is able to change states.
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, liquid and gas.
What is a substance?
A substance is matter that has particular properties.
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is a single form of matter that cannot be physically separated in other types of matter.
What is a Mixture?
A mixture is when two or more substances physically combine.
Contrast
Talk about the differences.
Soluble?
A substance that dissolves is said to be soluble.
Insoluble?
A substance that does not dissolve is said to be insoluble.
What is a solution?
A solution (liquid) is homogenous mixture that looks and behaves like a single substance.
What is a solution made of?
Solvent + Solute = Solution
What is the Solvent?
The solvent is the substance that dissolves the other ( the solvent is always a liquid).
What is the Solute?
The solute is the substance that dissolves. (Can be a solid or liquid)
What is Qualitative data?
Qualitative data is referring to the qualities/descriptive.
What is Quantitative data?
Quantitative data is referring to quantities and is expressed in numbers.
What is Parallax error?
Parallex error is the error you get from not reading the scale at 90 degrees
What is the safety flame on a Bunsen burner?
The Safety flame is what you get when the air hole is closed, it is also yellow, quiet and less hot than the working flame.
What is the working flame on a Bunsen burner?
The Working flame is when the air hole is open, it is blue, noisy and very hot.
What are the 3 types of variables?
Controlled variable, independent variable and dependent variable.
What is the Controlled variable?
The Controlled variable is the variable that remains the same through the whole experiment so it is a fair test.
What is the Independent variable?
The Independent variable is the variable is the one that is changed.
What is the Dependent variable?
The Dependent variable is the variable that depends on other factors (is the one we measure)
What are the types of Strengths of Solutions?
Diluted solution, Saturated solution, Concentrated solution and aqueous solution.
What is a Diluted solution?
Contains only a small amount of solute.
What is a Saturated solution?
Is when the solvent won’t dissolve the solute any more.
What is a Concentrated solution?
Is when there is a larger amount of solute.
What is a Suspension?
A suspension is a mixture between a liquid and a solid, however the solid particles do not dissolve because the solid particles are said to be suspended.
What is a aqueous solution?
is when the solvent is water.
