Science Topics 4-10 Flashcards
What are 5 layers of the earth?
Crust-home to plants, animals, soil Includes deeper areas where minerals are mined and oil gases are found
Upper mantle-The upper mantle is solid and together with the crust forms the lithosphere.Made of Rick material
Lower Mantle-Partly Melted and has the consistency of taffy-Rock material in the mantle can flow very slowly
Outer core-tempature of 5500°c Composed of Iron and nickel
Inner core-tempature is over 6000°c
Intense pressure of all the layers forces the inner core into a solid ball
What does SONAR stand for?when is it used?
Sound navigation and ranging. It is used to study the surface at the bottom of the ocean.
Define diverging plates and converging plates.
Diverging plates-two or more plates moving away from each other
Converging plates-two or more plates colliding/coming together
What is the theory of sea floor spreading?
What is some evidence of sea floor spreading?
The theory is that magnetic stripes that ran along the bottom of the ocean floor were reversed.
Evidence of sea floor spreading suggests that the process of the ocean floor slowly increasing size over time is because of the formation of igneous rock.
What is the mid Atlantic ridge?
It is a mountain range spanning the Atlantic Ocean from North to South.
What is the theory of plate tectonics?
The earth is made of different plates(sections). These plates are always moving on the mantle due to convection currents.
Evidence of continental drift.
Alfred Wagner hypothesized that the continents were joined together then the continents were then separated.
What are covection currents? What do they cause?
Convection current is the flow resulting from the rise of warmer and the sinking of cooler material. They are moving the earth’s crust with can cause volcanoes,Mountains and islands to form. They can also cause subduction zones.
When does a subduction zone occur?
When two plates collide or converge, one is shoved under the other.
