science topics 1-3 Flashcards
topics 1-3
What is a thermometer?
A thermometer is used for measuring temperture
what is a celsius scale?
Andres celsius developed the celsius scale. He based his scale on two properties ,the boiling point and the freezing point of water.
What is the kelvin scale?
Lord kelvin invented the Kalvin scale, another way of measuring temature.
What is absolute zero?
Absolute zero is the point where particles stop moving(-273.15’c
What is thermocouple and how does it work?
Used for furnaces and anything with natural gas has a thermomcouple.
What is a bimetallic strip?
Two diffrent pieces of metal to detect heat.
What is a recording thermometer?
A recording thermometer coils and uncoils as the tempature changes.
What is an infrared thermogram?
An infrared thermogram is used to detect heat in a building.
What are 4 ideas of the particle theory of matter?
p-particles-All substances are made of tiny particles
m-motion-particles are always in motion(vibrating rotating)
s-space-All particles have space beetween them.
t-tempature-if the tempature increases, the movment of the particles increase and vice versa.
What is energy?
Energy is the measure of something’s ability to do work. In other words, the ability to change cause.
What is thermal energy?
Thermal energy is the energy that comes from heat. The heat is generated by the movment of tiny particles n an object.
Which way does heat energy travel- from hot to cold or from cold to hot?
Hot to cold.think of hot drinks. The heat travels from the hot drink to cooler air.
What is two features of energy?
Energy is not a substance. It cannot be weighed. it does not space up space.Energy describes a quality or condition.
What is two features of energy 2?
Energy is a property or quality of an object, or substance that gives it the ability to move ,do work,or cause change.
What is the law of conservation energy?
Th law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transformed from one form to another or passed from one object to another.
