science - the particle model Flashcards
what are the states of matter and their properties?
solid - relatively rigid, definite volume and shape. In a solid, the atoms and molecules are attached to each other.
Liquids – definite volume but able to change shape by flowing. In a liquid, the atoms and molecules are loosely bonded.
Gases – no definite volume or shape., liquid and gas
what is diffusion?
process resulting from random motion of molecules by which there is a net flow of matter from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration.
what is drag?
Drag is a mechanical force. It is generated by the interaction and contact of a solid body with a fluid
Why do solids expand when they are heated?
The particles vibrate more and take up more space.
What happens to the density of a block of iron when it is heated?
It decreases, because the volume increases.
When liquid water changes into steam it is
evaporating.
