science - plants and their reproduction Flashcards
How is asexual reproduction different from sexual reproduction?
does not involve fusions of gametes
state one advantage and one disadvantage of asexual reproduction
advantage: Does not need another organism / lower risk of mutation
Disadvantage: No adaptation from gametes
What is the term that describes the offspring resulting from asexual reproduction?
clones/cloning
Name two organisms that reproduce through asexual reproduction.
Any two from Hydra / amoeba / bacteria / starfish
The diagram below shows the parts of a flowering plant, with various parts numbered
Fill in the table below listing the names of the numbered parts.
- anther
2.filament - petal
- sepal
- stigma
- style
- ovary
- ovule
what part of the flower produces pollen?
anthers
what part of the flower produces seeds?
ovule
what would you find inside the male and female sex cells
you would find a nucleus
Describe how the anther and stamen of the flower could be adapted to prevent self-pollination
Positioned so as to prevent self-pollination (or something reasonable) / ripening at different times
Give one advantage and one disadvantage of self-pollination.
Advantage: Does not need another factor / good for mass production
Disadvantage: No variation / adaptation due to cross pollination
The number of bee colonies has been steadily declining. Explain why this is a concern for farmers.
Some flowers rely on bees for pollination so crops affected / commercial issue / any reasonable argument including honey production [
State the name of the process by which seeds are distributed away from the parent plant
Dispersal / dispersion
If the pea pod is left on the plant, it slowly dries out, which makes the pod twist. At a certain point, the pod suddenly splits open and flicks out the seeds.
Explain why the plant does this
Sends seeds away from plant
Reduces competition for resources
Describe two other ways in which plants send their seeds away from the parent plant
Using animals - consumed / attached to fur or clothing
Using water - floating away from plant
Air using parachute or spinners
Name three other life processes.
growth, excretion, nutrition, reproduction, sensitivity. .
