What is the definition of Distillation?
A process of purifying a liquid by heating and cooling.
What is the definition of Solube?
A substance able to be dissolved, especially in a liquid (If the liquid is clear)
What is the definition of Insoluble?
A substance incapable of being dissolved. (If the liquid is cloudy)
What is the definition of Suspension?
Mixture in which the solid particles are spread throughout the liquid without dissolving. (Insolube)
What is the definition of Homogenisation?
A process of blending things together to form a mixture that is the same throughout.
What is the definition of Chromatography?
A process/technique used to separate components of a mixture. (eg. separating colours from ink or paint)
What is the definition of Solute?
Is a minor component in a solution that dissolves in the solvent.
What is the definition of Dilute?
To make a liquid thinner or weaker by adding water or another solvent to it. (More solvent = more dilute)
What is the definition of Sediment?
Matter that sinks to the bottom of a liquid. (Insoluble)
What is the definition of Goluble?
A small droplet of a liquid. (eg. liquid chemicals or substances)
What is the definition of Solvent?
A chemical or liquid that can dissolve other substances.
What is the definition of Solution?
A liquid mixture in which the solute is evenly distributed within the solvent.
What is the definition of Evaporation?
The process of turning from a liquid into a gas.
What is the definition of Concentrated?
The quantity of solute present in a quantity of solution. (more solute = more concentrated solution)
What is the definition of Residue?
A substance that remains after a process such as combustion or evaporation.
What is the definition of Filtration?
The process of filtering something.
What is the definition of Condensation?
The conversion of a gas to a liquid.
What is the definition of Colloid?
Any substance consisting of particles substantially larger than atoms or ordinary molecules but too small to be visible to the unaided eye. (colloids are cloudy)
What is the definition of Mixture?
A substance is made by mixing other substances together. (seawater, air and ink)
What is the definition of Filtrate?
A liquid that has passed through a filter.
What is the definition of Pure Substance?
A single kind of matter that cannot be separated (eg. gold)
What is the definition of Emulison?
The dispersion of droplets of one liquid in another that is insoluble or can’t dissolve.
What is the definition of Decanting?
To slowly pour a liquid from one container to another. (usually to separate the sediment from the liquid)
What is the definition of Crystallisation?
A process of concentrating a solution to the formation of solid particles in a homogeneous phase.
What is the definition of a Separating Funnel?
A process of separating components of a mixture into a solid depending on the density of the solid.
