Science Test Revision Flashcards
What is a convergent boundary?
plates collide, and lithosphere is destroyed
What are divergent Boundaries?
Moving away from each other, magma rises in-between and lithosphere is formed.
Define Climate Change.
Climate change is a long-term change of temperature or environmental status.
What can seismic data predict?
size of earthquakes, tsunamis,
What does convection cause?
It causes hot rock to rise and cooler rock to sink
What is a Hot Spot volcano?
Forms in the middle of a plate when there is a build up of hot magma, hot spot doesn’t move but the plate tectonic does, overtime a chain of hot spot volcanoes form and only the ones above the hot spot erupt.
What is a ionic bond?
link formed between an attraction with oppositely charged ions.
What is reflection?
When light hits a shing surface such as a mirror, it reflects off at the same angle
What are greenhouse gases and provide an example.
Greenhouse gases are gases that trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere and examples are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases.
What is refraction?
When light bends when traveling through an object that is transparent
What is absorption?
Some light is absorbed when reflecting off an opaque and rough object like brick and concrete
What is the greenhouse effect?
Gasses caught in the atmosphere trapping in heat
Name the types of waves from smallest to largest
Radio waves
Micro Waves
Infrared Radiation
Visible Light
Ultraviolet
X-rays
Gamma Rays
What are types of greenhouse gasses?
chlorofluorocarbons
carbon dioxide
methane
Nitrous oxide (o-zone)
Water vapour
What are transform boundaries?
They are plates that slide past each other where lithosphere is neither destroyed or created
