what is emergency care?
aka ED (emergency department) distributes medical attention to people who urgently need it.
what are the aims of emergency care?
to treat peple who need urgent care in an orderly fashion whilst also being the safest they can,, treating the patients that need the most medical attention first.
identify DRSABCD
D- dangers, check for dangers
R- response, look for responses, ask for their name, say hello
S- send for help, call 000
A- airways, ensure airways are clear
B- breathing, check pulse and ensure casualty is breathing
C- CPR, start compressions
D- defibrillation
what are the priorities for a conscious casualty
make sure they stay conscious and make sure that their airways are clear and constantly check that they’re breathing,
list factors in controlling breathing
keep pressure on the area, constrict the blood vessel, block the bleeding temporarily with a plug, activate coagulation cascade
if a person is suffering from shock, what should be done to keep them safe?
ensure their airways are clear, raise the patients leg above heart level, keep their head flat on the floor, use a blanket to keep them warm, loosen any tight clothing.
list 3 things to do to a burns casualty
run burns under cold running water, remove overly tight items from the area e.g. rings, clothing etc. be careful to not break blisters
list 3 things not to do to a burns casualty
do not use ice, do not remove burned clothing, do not break blisters
if a casualty is chocking and can not cough, what do you do?
hit them firmly on the back in between their shoulder blade with the heel of the palm of your hand
if a person is having an asthma attack, how many puffs of asthma medication should you give them?
4 puffs, with 4 breaths in between each puff
what do you give a diabetic casualty that is feeling unwell?
insulin, or sweet treats like lollies or sugary drinks etc.
