Science test review Flashcards
What are the surrounding rings called on the atom?
electron shell
what holds the protons and neutrons in an atom?
nucleus
which subatomic particle is on the outer ring and has a negative charge?
electron
which subatomic particle has a positive charge and is located in the nucleus?
proton
which subatomic particle has no charge and is located in the nucleus?
neutron
what are all of the rings called in an atom?
electron cloud
mass for proton?
1 amu
mass for neutron?
1 amu
mass for electron?
very small, does not contribute to mass
how do neutral atoms differ from ions?
ions have gained or lost electrons and therefore have a charge. (positive or negative)
If an atom gains electrons, what happens to its charge?
the atom’s charge turns negative
If an atom looses an electron, what happens to it’s charge?
the atom’s charge turns positive
what is a cation?
an ion with a positive charge (PAWSITIVE)
what is an anion?
An ion with a negative charge (ONION/negative)
How do isotopes of the same element differ?
They each have different amounts of neutrons
Which subatomic particle determines which type of atom you have?
proton
whats the difference in the isotopes carbon-12 and carbon-14?
carbon 12 has 6 neutrons and 14 has 8 neutrons.
which number determines the place/identity on the periodic table?
the atomic number/ number of protons
how do you find the mass of an atom?
add protons and neutrons
what is an atom?
the smallest particle that still has properties of an element
what is an ion?
an atom with a positive or negative charge
what is an isotope?
different versions of the same atom/element (occurs when neutrons are added or subtracted)
what is the atomic number?
number of protons in an element
what is atomic mass?
protons + neutrons
