Science TERMS 3.1-2.0 Flashcards
Food
A substance consumed to provide energy and building material for an organism.
Calories
Units of energy, indicate the amount of energy provided by food molecules.
Carbohydrates
One of the three particles of food, the two subgroups of carbohydrates are starch (fiber) and sugar.
Proteins
One of the three particles that consists of amino acids.
Fats
One of the three particles of food. Fat is often referred to as triglycerides.
Energy
Can make things happen.
Amino Acids
Subunits of proteins.
Cellular Respiration
The process where our cells convert food and oxygen into energy, water and carbon dioxide.
Chemical Energy
The energy that is stored in the bonds of chemical compounds. The type of energy our bodies use to function properly.
Thermal Energy
Energy transferred as heat.
Kinetic Energy
Energy in motion.
Metabolism
The sum of all chemical reactions in the body that convert food into energy and maintain life.
Isotopes
Atoms that contain different neutrons in the nucleus, that make them weigh more than normal atoms.
Enzymes
Substances in our bodies that speed up chemical reactions.
Reactants
The original substances in a chemical reaction that are changed in a chemical reaction.
