Science study #2 Flashcards
Length
The measure of distance from one point to another
Volume
The amount that can fit inside an object or container, or the amount of space an object takes up in water
Mass
The amount of matter in an object
Units for mass
g ( grams ) , kg ( kilograms )
Units for length
mm cm m km
Volume
ML, L
Meniscus
The “dip” in water that we see in a graduated cylinder. TAKING THE READING FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE CURVE MAKES THE READING MORE ACCURATE
Rules for Triple beam balance
- Riders are all set to zero.
- The pan is clean and the balance is on a flat surface
- The pointer is pointed perfectly at zero.
How do you fix the pointer if it is not at zero?
- Use the Zero Adjustment Knob
- Turn it towards you if it is above the 0
- Turn it away from you if it is below the 0
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object and the weight is the force of gravity being pulled down on an object
Conversions
Length: Mass: Volume:
10 mm = 1 cm 1000 g = 1 kg 1000 ml = 1 L
100 cm = 1 m
1000 mm = 1 m
1000 m = 1 km
Comparisons
The space between our fingers when we hold a coin is similar to = 1 millimeter
The width of our fingernail from left to right is similar to= 1 centimeter
The mass of a paper clip is similar to = 1 gram
The volume of a smart water bottle is similar to= 1 Liter
