Science - Rocks and Minerals Flashcards
What is a rock?
A rock is a solid object found in nature.
What is a mineral?
Minerals are the building blocks of rocks. Rocks can be made of one or more mineral.
What are the three main types of rocks?
Igneous rock.
Sedimentary rock.
Metamorphic rock.
How are igneous rocks formed?
Igneous rocks are formed when magma or lava cools and hardens.
What is sediment?
Sediment is a mixture of sand, broken shells, and bits of other materials that sits at the bottom of bodies of water.
How is sedimentary rock formed?
When layers of sediment pile on top of each other, the bottom layers get pressed together until they form a rock.
How is metamorphic rock formed?
Metamorphic rock started out as igneous or sedimentary rock, but it got changed by intense heat and pressure under the surface of the earth, and became a new type of rock.
In which type of rock do we usually find fossils?
Sedimentary rock is where we find fossils of the plants and animals that were buried in that sediment.
