Science Review Q4 Flashcards
What are the steps of nutrition in order.
Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, Assimilation, Egestion.
What does Digestion do?
The breakdown of food into smaller, soluble substances.
What are the two types of Digestion?
Mechanical digestion, Chemical digestion.
What does Absorption do?
The process where digested food (nutrients) passes into the bloodstream or lymph from the small intestine.
What does Assimilation do
The use of absorbed nutrients by body cells for energy, growth, and repair.
What is Ingestion?
The process of taking food into the mouth.
What does BMI stand for?
Body Mass Index.
What is the definition of BMI?
A number calculated from your weight and height to estimate if you’re underweight, healthy, overweight, or obese.
How do you calculate BMI?
Divide your Weight(kg) by your Height(meters) and square your height.
What is Intracellular Digestion?
Digestion inside the cell (mainly in single-celled organisms).
What Extracellular Digestion?
Digestion occurs outside the cell (as in humans).
Give 5 tips in preventing digestive disorders.
Eat a balanced, fiber-rich diet.
Stay hydrated.
Exercise regularly.
Avoid overeating and excessive alcohol.
Limit fatty, spicy, and processed foods.
Manage stress.
Don’t ignore the urge to go to the bathroom.
What do Carbohydrates, Protein, Fats, Vitamins, Water, and Fiber do?
Carbohydrates – Main source of energy.
Proteins – Body building and repair.
Fats – Energy and cell function.
Vitamins & Minerals – Support various body functions.
Water – Vital for all body processes.
Fiber – Supports digestion and prevents constipation.
How does mechanical digestion work?
The process of chewing food and breaking it down into a soluble substance.
How does chemical digestion work
The process where the body further breaks down the food to be used as chemicals.
