science mid terms topic 1 & 2 focus questions Flashcards
What are the four major characteristics shared by all living things?
Cells
-Grow, Develop and reproduce
-Must use energy (ATP)
-Stimulus/Response
Why do all living things need water, food and space to live?
Food - energy
Space/shelter - protection
List two examples of homeostasis
Shivering when cold
Sweating when hot
What are the three functions of all cells?
-Obtain energy
-Bring nutrients
-Get rid of waste
What are the three main points of cell theory?
-Living things must have cells
-Cells is the structure and function for living
-Cells come from existing cell
What did Hook, Leeuwenhoek, Schwann and Schleiden accomplish related to the study of cells?
Hook accomplished the 1st microscope and named cells.
Leeuwenhoek was the first person to look at “living cells” under a microscope. The living cells he was studying were animal cells.
Schwann studied animal cells and Schleiden studied plant cells. Together they created cell theory
List three items that move into cells and one that moves out
Oxygen (into / enter)
Water
Food / Nutrients (out / exit waste)
What does selectively permeable mean? Why is it important that the cell membrane is selectively permeable?
Selectively permeable means some substances can cross the membrane. On the other hand, others can’t. It’s so important that the cell membrane is selectively permeable because this helps a cell maintain homeostasis.
What is passive transport? What is active transport?
Passive transport is the movement of materials in a cell that requires no energy
Active transport uses energy to move materials into or out of the cell
Where does cellular respiration take place in the cell?
Stage 1 - For stage 1, cellular respiration takes place in the cytoplasm
Stage 2 - For stage 2, cellular respiration takes place in the mitochondria
Do both plants and animals use cellular respiration? Why?
Yes, because cellular respiration provides cells of all living things with energy
What are two examples of useful products made by fermentation?
Bread
Yogurt
