Q

What did Hook, Leeuwenhoek, Schwann and Schleiden accomplish related to the study of cells?

A

Hook accomplished the 1st microscope and named cells.
Leeuwenhoek was the first person to look at “living cells” under a microscope. The living cells he was studying were animal cells.
Schwann studied animal cells and Schleiden studied plant cells. Together they created cell theory

Q

What does selectively permeable mean? Why is it important that the cell membrane is selectively permeable?

A

Selectively permeable means some substances can cross the membrane. On the other hand, others can’t. It’s so important that the cell membrane is selectively permeable because this helps a cell maintain homeostasis.

Q

What is passive transport? What is active transport?

A

Passive transport is the movement of materials in a cell that requires no energy
Active transport uses energy to move materials into or out of the cell
