Q

What mistakes were made by Hal, Charles, and Mercedes toward the dogs while they were on the trail?

A

Hal, Charles, Mercedes all have no idea what they are doing. One of the mistakes they made was overloading the sled. This made it harder for the dogs to pull the sled. Another mistake was that they didn’t feed the dogs enough food for the trail. Finally, Mercedes lays in the sled the whole time adding an extra 120 pounds for the already tired dogs to pull

A

Primitive instincts are instincts we are born with.We do not develop them but we just naturally have then.We don’t always use them but they are always there.Buck had to develop the primitive way of his ancestors in order to survive in the wild.Without these instincts he may have died.

Q

How is Buck tested by the Timber Wolves before he is accepted by them? How has this completed his transformation?

A

Buck is tested by the Timber Wolves when the pack sees him and they come to a complete stop. The most aggressive wolf strikes out, and Buck snaps his neck, which brings in the rest of the pack, but Buck holds them off. After they pull away, one of the wolves approaches whining softly. It is Buck’s wild brother. The two touch noses, and finally, the pack begins to howl. He is accepted, and they all run off together into the woods. This completed his transformation because now is completely wild and has found his forever pack.

Q

“The dark circle became a dot on the moon-flooded snow as Spitz disappeared from view. Buck stood and looked on, the successful champion, the dominant primordial beast who had made his kill and found it good.” (Ch. 3)

A

At this point in the story, Buck had just attacked SPitz and had succeeded.I think it is important to the story because this shows his dominance it shows how he was becoming the primordial beast. He was now the leader.

“A revolver shot rang out. The man came back hurriedly. The whips snapped, the bells tinkled merrily, the sleds churned along the trail; but Buck knew, and every dog knew, what had taken place behind the belt of river trees.” (Ch. 4)

A

This quote was when Dave was shot with a revolver after being injured and not able to stand up.The dogs knew their friend was lost but they had to continue doing their jobs whether they were upset or not.

Q

“They told us up above that the bottom was dropping out of the trail and that the best thing for us to do was to lay over,’ Hal said …. ‘They told us we couldn’t make White River, and here we are.’ This last with a sneering ring of triumph in it.” (Ch. 5)

A

The meaning of this quote is that you need to be careful with your surroundings. The ice that the sled is on top of is very thin and they are being told that they aren’t going to make it to the White River because the dogs are tired and there’s a chance the ice will break.

Q

“One night he sprang from sleep with a start, eager-eyed, nostrils quivering and scenting, his mane bristling in recurrent waves. From the forest came the call… distinct and definite as never before – a long-drawn howl, like, yet unlike, any noise made by a husky dog.” (Ch.7)

A

At this point in the book, Buck has become a part of the wild. He no longer has the thought of going back to Santa Clara with Judge Miller but has now become the primordial beast. He has adjusted to the wild but has also become a part of it as he heard the howl.

Buck’s First Beating with the Club and Curly’s Death

Buck’s first beating with the Club was when he got hit in the head. John Thornton saw this and went behind Hal’s back by saving Buck. He unleashed Buck’s leash and overtime created a special bond with Buck. Curly’s death was tragic and Spitz was laughing at his fate. Buck had seen Spitz laughing while looking at Curly getting ripped apart. This made Buck mad and decided to have a grudge against Spitz forever while planning to kill him.
