Science lesson 3 Unit 3 (Audrey Rudzinski) Flashcards
How is the lithosphere and asthenosphere involved in tectonic plate movement?
the lithosphere is on the asthenosphere. heat in the h asthenosphere creates convection currents moving the tectonic plates on the lithosphere .

The part that looks like an a is the anticline. the part that looks like a v is sinailcline.
Identify the kinds of lithosphere that make up tectonic plates?
Oceanic crust- more dense and thicker
continental crust - thick and less dense. also older
State the theory of plate tectonics and apply it to stress and deformation.
PLate tectonics is a theory that describes large scale movement in earth’s lithosphere. The movement of tectonics plates causes stress in rock and causes deformation. it can fault (break) or fold (bend)
Identify the main stress in crustal deformation.
- compression- 2 plates moving toward each other
- tension- 2 plates moving away from each other
- shear stress- 2 plates moving past each other.
3 kinds of mountains
- folded mountains
- fault block mountains
- volcanoes
What landforms happen with compression and convergent boundaries
folded mountains. collision of 2 plates. - Reverse fault vasue this
What landforms happen with tension and divergent boundaries
fault block mountains, rift valley, ocean rift valleys. - normal faults cause this
What landforms happen with Stress and transform boundaries
volcanoes. - strike slip faults cause this.
Js know this. stuff on viscosity
m
The shape and explosiveness of a volcano depend on
the lava’s viscosity, or resistance to flow. Low viscosity
lava flows easily, forms low slopes. High viscosity lava does not flow easily, forms steep slopes.
volcanic landforms.
ON QUIZ!
- Shield volcanoes
- Cinder cones
- Composite volcanoes
- Lava plateaus
- Craters
- Calderas
types of lava
Basaltic
Least viscous
30-60 km/hr
Andesitic
Middle viscous
10 km/hr
Rhyolitic
Most viscous
1 km/hr
