Science Lesson 3 Flashcards
Covalent Bond
Second Type of Chemical Bond; it forms when two atoms share one or more pairs of electrons
Ionic Bonds
Electrons are transferred between atoms
Electronegativity
measures an atom’s ability to attract electrons within a chemcial bond
High Electronegativity
Indicates a greater ability to attarct electrons
How much Electronegativity in a Covalent Bond
Less Than 1.7
How much Electronegativity in a Ionic Bond
More Than 1.7
Molecules (Formation of Covalent Compounds)
When two or more nonmetallic elements are combined
- Single Covalent Bond
- Double Covalent Bond
- Triple Covalent Bond
3 Types of Covalent Bonds
Single Covalent Bond
Denoted by one short line; sharing of one electron pair
Double Covalent Bond
Denoted by two short line; sharing of two electron pair
Triple Covalent Bond
Denoted by three short line; sharing of three electron pair
Covalent Compounds Formulas
Derived from their LEDS; shows the number of each atom with the more electropositive element listed first, followed by more electronegative element
Diatomic Molecules
molecules that contain only 2 atoms
Electropositive
implies having the tendency to lose electrons and form positive ions
Electronegative
implies having the tendency to gain electrons to form negative ions
