Science inquiry Flashcards
What is interval data?
Data measured on a scale.
What is ordinal data?
Data with a definite sequence, but the gap between one level and the next is not constant.
e.g. - Ages of people in class
- Body mass of people in a room
What is nominal data?
If you separate individuals by a property that has no quantitative value and no order is implied.
e.g. - Natural hair colour
- Religion
- Type of school
What is objective data?
Measured according to identifiable external criteria.
e.g. if a person in class measured the length of a desk, another person would obtain the same result.
What is subjective data?
Based on opinion, no external yardstick by which they are measured.
What is random sampling?
Every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
What is an extraneous variable?
A variable other than the IV that could cause changes in the value of the DV. These are not desirable.
What is a dependant variable?
The DV is the property measured in the research.
What is an independent variable?
An IV is deliberately manipulated or varied in some way by the experimenter.
What is a confounding variable?
A variable other than the IV that has a systematic effect on the value of the DV. If this variable exists the experiment is usually a waste of time.
What is quantitative data?
Refers to measurements: Numerical information about variables being studied.
What is qualitative data?
Refers to descriptions of the characteristics of what is being studied.
What is the experimenter effect?
The result of an experiment being unintentionally (or even intentionally) influenced by the experiment.
What is the placebo effect?
The participants behaviour being influenced by their expectations of how they should behave.
