Biological psychology Flashcards
What is the ANS?
Autonomic nervous system
A part of the PNS, the ANS controls movement that occurs automatically or without any conscious awareness.
What is the SNS?
Somatic nervous system
A part of the PNS, the SNS controls all voluntary movement.
What is the function of interneurons?
Located in the CNS
Interneurons carry information directly between sensory neurons and motor neurons.
They are involved in the reflex arc.
What is the CNS?
Central nervous system
The CNS is made up of your brain and spinal cord.
The brain controls how we think, learn, move and feel. The spinal cord carries messages back and forth from the brain and nerves.
What is the function of motor neurons?
Efferent: moves away
Located primarily in the PNS.
The neurons carry out commands from the brain to the body’s muscles, organs and glands to enable movement.
What is the function of sensory neurons?
Afferent: moves towards
Located primarily in the PNS
The neurons detect energy from the environment and carry information about it to the CNS.
What is the PNS?
Peripheral nervous system
Peripheral nerves reside outside your brain and spinal cord.
The nerves relay information between your brain and the rest of your body. The PNS is divided into two main parts, the somatic and autonomic nervous systems.
