Science Exam 3.0 Flashcards
Types of reactions
- synthesis reaction
- decomposition reaction
- displacement reaction
What is a chemical reaction??
A chemical reaction is a process where a set of substances undergo a chemical change to form a different substance
What is a synthesis reaction??
Synthesis reaction is one where two substances combined to make a new substance. It can be shown in an equation such as A+B=AB.
What is decomposition reaction??
A decomposition reaction is where a complex substance breaks down to form two separate substances. It can be shown in an equation such as AB= A+B
What is displacement reaction??
A displacement reaction is where elements or compounds are displaced to make new substances
Examples of synthesis reaction
Water: 2H2 + O2= 2H2O
Carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2= 2CO2
A+B=AB
Examples of decomposition reaction
CaCO3= CaO + CO2
AB= A+B
2KCIO3= 2KCI + 3O2
Examples of displacement reaction
AC+BD=AB+CD
Mg+2HCI=MgCI+H2
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a combination of two substances or more
Types of mixtures
Homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures
What is an homogenous mixture??
Is a mixture where the components are not visible
What is heterogeneous mixture??
A mixture where the components are visible sometimes
Homogeneous examples
Soda medicine cupcake etc.
Heterogeneous examples
Salad pizza taco soup etc.
Separation methods
For homogeneous mixtures distillation and evaporation
For heterogeneous mixtures evaporation filtration decantation magnetic separation
