Science - Electricity Flashcards
Proton
Builds an atom - positive charge
Electron
Builds and atom - negative charge
Neutron
Builds an atom - neutral charge
Static Electricity
Build up of electrons that have been displaced on a surface
Current Electricity
Movement of electrons along a conductor
An electrical circuit is made up of:
- Energy source
- Energy user
- Conductors
Current
The rate at which electrons are flowing through a circuit
Measured with Ammeter
Unit: Ampere (A)
Voltage
The difference in charge between two points
Measured with Voltmeter
Unit: Volts (V)
Resistance
A force that opposes a current
Measured with Ommeter
Unit: Ohm (Ω)
Factors in wires that affect resistance
- Material
- Length (longer = more resistance)
- Thickness (thicc = less resistance)
Active wire
A brown wire that brings current into a household
Neutral wire
A blue wire that takes current from the household
Earth wire
A green or yellow wire that prevents electrocution in a household
Safety switch
Prevents electrocution
Circuit breakers
Prevents overheating and electrical fires
