Science - Classification, Variation and Adaptation Flashcards
Chromosome
An entire chain of Dna, along with a group of stabilizing protein. Also, it is DNA rolled up into a coil.
[P] Correlation
If two sets of data show correlation, it means they are somehow related or connected
[N] Correlation
A relationship between two variables such that as the value of one variable increases, the other decreases.
Nucleiotides
Chemicals A,C,T,G in DNA.
Inherited Traits
- Natural eye colour
*Natural hair colour
*Blood type
*Inherited diseases
Dominant Gene
when it effectively overrules the other (recessive) allele
Recessive
the alleles of the trait-causing gene are the same, and both (recessive) alleles must be present to express the trait
Characteristic, feature, trait
A distinctive, feature, or property of an or population.
Variation
Difference between individuals of the same species. Caused either genetically or environmentally.
Continuos Variation
Gradual changes in a characteristic e.g height.
Discontinuous Variation
Big variations that can be put into seperate categories e.g eye colour
Inherited Variation
A distinguishing quality or characteristic acquired from one’s ancestors that can be passed on to offspring.
Environmental Variation
A distinguishing quality or characteristic acquired from a change in the environment and cannot be passed on to offspring.
DNA
[Deoxyribonucelic acid] The chemical information to make organisms.
Double Helix
The shape of DNA found in the nucleus of a cell.
Gene
A section of DNA the contains information to make one protein.
Genetically Modified Organism
An organism that has had its DNAA altered artificially by scientists and may contain extra or fewer genes causing altered characteristics.
