Science - Cells Flashcards
Nucleus
Controls the cell, contains the DNA. [A+P]
Chloroplasts
Where photosynthesis takes place. Also contains the chlorophyll. [P]
Cell wall
Gives support to the cell. After cell membrane [ A+P]
Cell membrane
Controls what goes in and out of the cell. Before cell wall [A+P]
Cytoplasm
Where chemical reactions take place. Amino acid is stored there.
Chlorophyll
Makes plants GREEN.
Respiration
Takes place in the mitochondria. Energy comes from respiration. Takes place in statoma and leaves.
Xylem
Carries water to and minerals from the roots to the leaves.
Phloem
Carries food around the plant
Flower
Attracts insects for pollination/ reproduction
Stem
Gives structure to the plant. Transports water and food around the plant.
Leaf
Photosynthesis takes place here. Absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis.
Roots
Carries water and nutrients from the soil.
Red Blood Cells
*No nucleus
*Carry Oxygen in the blood to all the other cells in the body.
Ciliated Epithelial Cells
*Lining cells with tiny hairs [cilia] which move dust and germs away.
*Found in the oviduct and windpipe.
Sperm Cells
*Male reproductive cells
*Have a tail to help them swim to meet egg cell.
*They carry genetic material to the egg cell.
Egg Cells
*This is a very large cell.
*It contains genetic material
*When an egg and sperm cells meet, they make a new individual.
Nerve Cells
*Have very long thread like parts.
*Carry information to and from the brain.
Palisade Cell
*To capture as much light as possible to enable photosynthesis to occur.
Root Hair Cell
*Has a long ‘finger-like’ projection with very thing walls.
* Takes in water and minerals from the soil
Pollen Cell
Has a hard protective outer coat to survive bad conditions.
