Science Chapters 6.3, 8.1 - 8.5 Flashcards
What is a mineral?
A mineral is a chemical substance which is naturally occuring solid that has not been made by any organism.
What is geology?
Geology is the study of rocks.
What are the two types of Igneous Rocks?
Extrusive Rocks And Intrusive Rocks
Why do intrusive rocks have large crystals?
Because they are formed underground and they cool slowly.
Why do extrusive rocks have smaller crystals?
Because they are formed above ground and they therefore cool faster.
WHat are some ways we can classify rocks?
-Texture
-Colour
-Weight
What are some uses for igneous rocks?
Buildings, Roads, Benchtops
What are sedimentary rocks?
Sedimentary rocks are rocks made from sediments.
How is clastic sedimentary rock formed?
Clastic sedimentary rocks are formed when seidments are squashed together with natural pressure and cement
How is chemical sedimentary rock formed?
They are formed from evaporation and crystallisation.
How is organic sedimentary rock formed?
Organic sedimentary rock is formed when dead organisms and plant matter is cemented together
What are the two types of metamorphism?
Regional and contact
What is regional metamorphism?
Regional metamorphism is caused by huge movements in the earths crust.
What is erosion?
Erosion is the process of which materials are worn away and transported by natural forces such as wind or water.
What is weathering?
Weathering is all the physical, chemical and biological proccess that breaks rocks down into smaller pieces.
