Every substance in the world is made up of _____?
Atoms
What are elemnts?
Elements are substances that are made up of just one type of atom.
What are some properties of mettalic elements?
- tend to be shiny (lustrous)
- are solid at room temprature
- are good conductors of heat and electricity
- can be bent or hammered (malleable)
- can be streched into wires (ductile)
What are some properties of non metallic elements?
- tend to be dull
- do not conduct heat or electricity (are insulators for electricity and heat.)
- break or crumble when you bend them (brittle)
What is a monatomic element?
An element that is made up of many individual atoms is known as monatomic.
What is a molecular element?
Molecules in clusters of two or more atoms bonded together.
What are lattices?
Lattices are large grid like structures that repeat the same arrangement of atoms over and over.
What are compounds?
Substances that are made up of more than one type of atom
What are molecular compounds
All the molecules in a compound are identical in size and shape, and have the same numbers of atoms.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is made up of more than one substance, where the substances are not chemically bonded together.
Substances that make up a mixture can be easily seperated- true or false?
True
What is an alloy?
A mixture of metal with other metals/non metals
How many substances together is considered a mixture?
Two or more
When does physical change occur?
- no new substance formed
- has changes to the physical appearance: shape, size or state
what is expansion?
When an object is
heated, it will expand
(get bigger).
The particles will also
move quicker.
