Science chapter test on 10/4/13 Flashcards
Cell Division
Cell division is the process in which one cell, called the parent cell, divides to form two new cells, referred to as daughter cells
Parent Cell
The cell that is dividing in Cell division
Daughter Cell
The product of Cell Division
Chromosome
A chromosome is a molecule of DNA, and will be the focus of a subsequent concept.
Binary Fission
Most prokaryotic cells divide by the process of binary fission.
Mitosis
mitosis, a multi-phase process in which the nucleus of the cell divides.
Cell Cycle
The cell cycle is a repeating series of events that include growth, DNA synthesis, and cell division.
Tumor
a mass of abnormal cells called a tumor
Chromatin
During other phases of the cell cycle, DNA is not coiled into chromosomes. Instead, it exists as a grainy material called chromatin.
Chromatids
Because DNA has already replicated, each chromosome actually consists of two identical copies. The two copies are called sister chromatids.
Centromere
The Chromatids They are attached to one another at a region called the centromere.
Genes
The DNA of a chromosome is encoded with genetic instructions for making proteins. These instructions are organized into units called genes.
homologous chromosomes
The chromosomes in a pair are known as homologous chromosomes.
