Science Chapter 2 Lesson 1-2 Quiz Study Flashcards
What is symmetry, bilateral symmetry, radial symmetry, and asymmetry?
Symmetry describes the balanced distribution of an animal’s parts around an axis. Bilateral symmetry is the body parts are arranged in the same way on their left and right sides. Radial symmetry is when the body parts of an animal are arranged in a circle around a center point. Asymmetry is when there is no symmetry at all.
What is a sponge?
A sponge is an invertebrate with a central cavity, many small pores, and a large opening on top.
What is a spongin?
The flexible substance that makes up the body of a sponge.
What does regeneration mean?
Regeneration is the process of growing new body parts.
What is a cnidarian?
Cnidarians are the group of invertebrate that includes sea anemones, sea jellies, corals, hydras, and the Portuguese man-of-war.
What is an annelid?
An annelid is the common segmented worm.
What is the difference between a vertebrate and an invertebrate?
A vertebrate has a backbone while an invertebrate has no backbone.
What are the 4 skeletal structures in invertebrates?
The 4 are:
1. A skeleton made of calcium, silica, and organic fibers.
2. A skeleton of calcium carbonate plates and spines.
3. A skeleton made of chitin.
4. Lastly, a skeleton made of a calcium carbonate shell.
What are the 5 different types of invertebrate phyla?
The 5 are: sponges, cnidarians, flatworms, roundworms, and segmented worms.
What is a sponge’s role in the ecosystem?
A sponge’s role in the ecosystem is to support the nitrogen cycle in coral reefs.
What is a cnidarian’s role in the ecosystem?
A cnidarian’s role in the ecosystem is to add diversity in the ocean and to maintain its health.
What is a flatworm’s role in the ecosystem?
A flatworm’s role in the ecosystem is to maintain the population of other animals by eating them.
What is a roundworm’s role in the ecosystem?
A roundworm’s role in the ecosystem is to help support the nitrogen cycle, to feed on insects that damage crops, and to add nutrients to the soil.
What is a segmented worm’s role in the ecosystem?
A segmented worm’s role in the ecosystem is to help decompose organic matter.
Define the phylum Porifera(sponges).
Sponges(Porifera) are the most simplistic animals. They have the most simplistic digestive and nervous systems.
