Science Cell Quiz #1 Flashcards
Mitosis
starts as one cell, finishes as two identical cells (non-reproductive cells).
Meiosis
starts as one cell, finishes as four cells with only half of the DNA (reproductive cells).
Cells
The smallest unit capable of performing life functions.
Organelles
Tiny structures inside of a cell, each with a specific function.
Cell Membrane
Controls movement in and out of the cell, lets ions in on purpose and lets waste out on purpose.
Ions
Ions are positive or negative molecules or atoms.
Gated Channel
Usually closed, but can open in response to chemical messengers (like a key).
Leakage Channel
Usually open and is small enough to let one ion through at a time.
Nucleus
Found in the center of the cell, contains DNA, directs all cell activities.
Nuclear Membrane
Surrounds the nucleus, protects things from coming in and out of the nucleus.
Chromatin
Found in the nucleus, contains DNA (deoxyribonucleic Acid), contains all genetic material, looks like squiggly lines inside of the nucleus.
Nucleolus
Found in the nucleus, makes ribosomes.
Cytoplasm
Gel-like mixture that contains chemicals and separates organelles from each other, “Blank space” in cell models.
