Science Benchmark PT.2 Flashcards
Identify the 3 types of plate boundaries.
In order, convergent, divergent, transform
Where are the biggest mountains in the world?
Which type of plate boundary caused this formation?
Himalayas.
Continental-Convergent plate boundaries
What kind of boundary is in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?
Divergent plate boundary forming at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge
What type of scale do we use to measure earthquakes?
Richter Scale to measure earthquake magnitude or strength.
What are P-waves
Seismic wave, faster, move through solids and liquids
What are S-waves
seismic wave, slower, move through only solids
What is lag time? What info does it give us?
Time difference between the arrival of the p and s wave. It allows us to determine the distance from the epicenter. We need 3 stations to triangulate its exact location.
List 3 points of evidence that indicate the continents have moved.
Continents seem to fit together like puzzle pieces
The same fossils line up across continents that are separated by oceans
Mountain ranges and rock composition line up across continents
Glacial/coal evidence
Explain how countries that are deficient in resources obtain them.
These countries will have to buy, trade, or develop an alternative resource to use.
How is petroleum formed?
Ancient marine organisms that were buried under heat, pressure, and millions of years.
What are renewable resources
Things we need to live that come from earth. Renewable resources can be replaced in a lifetime. Example: wind, solar, food, hydroelectric
What are non renewable resources
Resources that cannot be replaced within a lifetime. Examples: Fossil fuels such as gas, coal, and oil
