Science Atoms and Ions revision Flashcards
What is an element?
A substance made up of only one type of atom.
What is a compound? Name an example.
A substance formed from more than one element. An example of this is water.
What is a molecule? Name an example.
A group of two or more non-metallic atoms that are bound together. Oxygen is a molecule.
What are the two types of lattices?
Crystal lattices and Metallic lattices.
What are the three sub-atomic particles in an atom?
Protons, neutrons and electrons.
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons, this gives them a different mass number. they have the same atomic number but different mass number
What are the horizontal rows and vertical columns of the period table called?
The horizontal rows are called periods and the vertical columns are called groups.
What are some properties of Metals, non-metals and metalloids?
Metals: shiny, malleable, hard.
Non-metals: don’t conduct heat or electricity, brittle
Metalloids: semi conductors, share properties from both
What is an Alloy? Why are they made?
Pure metals are too soft to be made into useful things. An Alloy is metal combined with small amounts of another element.
What are ions?
Atoms that have an unequal number of protons and electrons.
What is an atom with a positive charge, and what is an atom with a negative charge?
An atom with a positive charge is cation, and an atom with a negative charge is an anion.
