Science and Health Literacy Flashcards
Implementation of the metric system
Pre-french revolution some 250,000 units for measurement. Estate general called, one grievance was the reform of weight and measures.
Following the French revolution, the metric system was implemented (the revolution proclaimed universal rights, scientists claimed universal measures)
Ancient measurements
Bound in ritual and custom, often anthropogenic
Unit of length
1/10,000,000 of the distance between the north pole and equator. Took 7 years to measure using geodesy. Now defined using speed of light
Standard for mass
Was initially 1cm3 of rainwater weight in a vaccum at maximum density. Has changed slightly since
First international science conference
Congress of Definitive Metric Standards, 1798, Paris
Time system
mixed decimal-sexagesimal system. Decimal time was tried but provided no advantage over the current system
ANSI
American national standard institute. Provides guidelines for abstracts
Abstract definition
a brief and objective representation of a document or an oral presentation
Annotation definition

Document definition
An item that is amenable to abstracting
Summary definition
A restatement within a document of its conclusions intending to orientate the reader.
Synoptic definition
An original publication of key results from previously unpublished work
Types of abstract
Informative vs indicative
Informative abstract
State purpose, methodology, results and conclusions.
Can be prose or structured.
Indicative abstracts
Used for less structured documents, describes purpose, discussions and descriptions
Authorship history
Used to be single, now its for anyone with a substantial contribution (co-authorship leading to hyperauthorship)
Subauthorship
Reflected in acknowledging statements: conceptual, editorial, financial, technical, moral and reader
Health literacy definition
The degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services to make informed health decisions
The Lily Model
e-Health literacy. Two major categories - first general literacy skills, second specific literacy skills
Health literacy
Patients can ready, understand and act on health care information
Science literacy
Understanding of the nature, aims, methods, applications and limitations of scientific thought and study
Computer literacy
Ability to use computers to solve problems
