Science 9 Topic 1 UD Flashcards
What is the difference between a Dry Cell and a Wet Cell?
Dry Cell contains a paste (Usually use this as a battery for our flashlights and MP3 Players)
Wet Cell contains a liquid (Usually use this for car batteries)
What is an Electrochemical Cell?
Package of chemicals designed to produce small amounts of electricity which produces electricity from chemical reactions eg (Pacemaker)
(This converts chemical energy into electrical energy)
What are the 2 types of Electrochemical Cells?
Dry Cells (AA Cells) Wet Cells (car batteries)
What is Electrolyte?
Liquid or Paste that makes Energy from Ions
What is an ion?
An atom that is positively charged
What do Wet Cells do?
They Attract Electrons. (Opposite of Dry Cells)
What do Dry Cells do?
They Repel from each other. (Opposite of Wet Cells)
What is an Electrode?
A conductor where electrical current can enter
What are Secondary Cells allowed to do?
They can be Recharged which makes them happy
What are Primary Cells
They cannot be recharged so they are not happy they are sad and have no energy
What is Electrolysis?
Decomposition of a substance by an electric current
What Is Electrochemistry?
study of chemical reactions involving electricity
What is Electroplating?
The use of electricity to coat a thin layer of metal onto an object.
What Are Insulators?
like wood, rubber or air it makes it harder for electrons to flow through the object.
