Why is the Funny Bone called
the Funny Bone?
Supposedly named after the Humerus Bone
(the bone between your shoulder and elbow)
But the sensation of impacting your “Funny Bone” is actually an impact on your Ulnar nerve
What is the primary function of joints in the body?
Joints allow for bones to connect with other bones and to allow for movement between the bones.
What are the four main components that make up a bodily joint?
- Cartilage
- Ligaments
- Tendons
- Synovial Fluid
What is Cartilage?
Cartilage is a tough, but elastic, tissue that covers the ends of bones, which reduces friction between the bones.
What are Ligaments?
Ligaments are tough, fibrous tissue that connects bones to other bones.
What are Tendons?
Tendons are tough, fibrous tissue that connects muscles to bones.
How do ligaments and tendons work together?
They create stability at the joint.
What can damage to ligaments and/or tendons result in?
Damage can create little to no use of the joint.
What is Synovial Fluid?
Synovial Fluid is a viscous liquid that is usually found in between bones at joints to help reduce friction.
What are the strongest joints in the human body?
Ball-and-Socket Joints.
Which joints are considered Ball-and-Socket joints in the human body?
- Hip Joint
- Shoulder
What is Synesthesia?
Synesthesia is a phenomenon where a human’s perception of things crosses between one’s senses.
Provide an example of Synesthesia.
- Seeing Music
- Feeling Colour
What three components contribute to Human Balance?
- Inner Ear
- Eyes
- Body’s Skeletal System
What does the Inner Ear’s Vestibular System do?
It detects the direction and speed of the head’s movement.
What role do the Eyes play in balance?
The Eyes provide visual cues to help determine ‘uprightness’.
What is Proprioception?
Proprioception is the body’s ability to sense its stability and orientation.
What causes Motion Sickness?
Motion Sickness is caused by conflicting messages to the Brain from the Inner Ear, the Eyes, and the Body.
What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is caused by a false sense of motion located in the Inner Ear, usually causing a spinning sensation.
Is the Nose supported by bone?
The Nose is supported by the Nasal Bone.
Is the Ear supported by bone?
The Ear is only supported by Muscles and Cartilage.
What is one purpose of bones?
Structural Support.
What is another purpose of bones?
Production of Blood Cells.
Where are blood cells produced?
Blood cells are produced in Bone Marrow.
