SCIENCE 3RD QUARTER: CIRCULATORY SYSTEM (UNFINISHED = DISCUSSION) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the main functions of the respiratory system?
A
- Gas Exchange
- Olfaction
- Voice Production
- Protection
2
Q
What is Gas Exchange?
A
- the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide:
~ between the atmosphere and the blood
~ between the blood and the body’s cells.
3
Q
What is Olfaction?
A
- the action or capacity of smelling
- molecules are released by substances around us
- when molecules enter your nostrils, they can stimulate receptors (on the olfactory sensory neurons in the back of the nose)
- those neurons send messages to your brain, which identifies the smell.
4
Q
How does the respiratory system produce our voices?
A
- Larynx or Voice Box
- air flows, moving up the windpipe and through the voice box (between the vocal folds)
- it starts (and keeps) the vocal folds vibrating until you stop talking or run out of breath.
5
