Science Flashcards
What do seeds do
They are structures that contain a young plant inside a protective covering
What is embryo
Young plant has a beginning of roots stems and leaves
What is a cotyledon
Stores food uses food until photosynthesis can occur
What is a seedcoat
Protects embryo and it’s food for drying out
What is dormancy
A period of inactivity which can be many years in which a seed is protected by its seedcoat and can withstand harsh conditions such as extreme hot or cold with little or no water
What is germination
In the right condition the seed begins to grow and sprout roots and stems
Can animals you sunlight to make food
No autotroph’s specifically plants are organisms that convert or change sunlight into energy
What is the ultimate source of energy for living things
The sun
What is photosynthesis
The process of using light to make sugar
What is photosynthesis required to have
Other than sunlight and chlorophyll carbon dioxide CO2 and water H2O
What is the photosynthesis equation
Carbon dioxide plus water sunlight chlorophyll glucose plus oxygen
What are photosynthesis end products
Food glucose and waste oxygen
What do leaves do
Captures suns energy and uses it to make food for the plant
What does chloroplast do
Traps energy and sunlight and uses it to make gluecose
What does Xylem do
Carries water between roots and leaves
