Science Flashcards
What does a chemist study?
Study of chemicals and how to change them.
What does a physicist do?
Study’s the behaviour of natural and manufactured substances.
What does an ecologist do?
Study how living things interact.
What does an astronomer do?
Study of planets, stars and the universe.
What is an inference?
A likely explanation for what is observed.
Eg- observation : smelling onion
Inference: someone might be onions cooking
What is an aim?
What you intend to do in the investigation.
What is a variable?
A quality or condition in an experiment that is likely to change.
What is a fair test?
Something that is a fair test on all scales.
What is a controlled variable?
What I will keep the same.
What is an independent variable?
What I will change.
What is a dependant variable?
What I will measure.
How can we tell it’s reliable?
Doing the experiment repeated times for a fair outcome.
What is a pure substance?
A substance that contains only one kind of particle.
What is an impure substance.
A mixture that contains more than one type of particle mixed together.
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture made up of one substance dissolved in another.
What is a solute?
Is the substance that is dissolved.
What is a solvent?
Is the substance that the solute is dissolved in.
What does soluble mean?
A substance that dissolves in a solvent.
What does dissolve mean?
To make a solution by mixing liquids.
What does insoluble mean?
A solid that will not dissolve in a solvent.
What does immiscible mean?
Two liquids which do not dissolve in each other.
What does miscible mean?
Two liquids that mix evenly together.
Define concentration.
The concentration of a solution is a measure of how much solute has been dissolved in a fixed amount of solvent.
No much dissolved solute = dilute.
Lots of solute dissolved = concentrated solution.
What is a suspension?
A mixture of a gas or liquid and an insoluble substance the i soluble substance settles to the bottom when the mixture is left to stand.
What is sediment?
The material that collects when the suspensions are left to stand (usually at the bottom).
Define emulsion.
A colloid with droplets of one liquid spread even,y through another.
Define : colloid.
A mixture in which extremely small particles of one substance we spread evenly throughout another.
What does a biologist study?
Living things such as plants, animals and micro-organisms.
