A primary source is something that was created at the time of the event

Stratigraphy is distinct layers of material beneath the ground built up over time, that provide information for archeologists.

Plaeontologists study animal and plant fossils.
What does a Cryptographer do?
A cryptographer study, create and decipher codes and writing systems.
What does an anthropologist do?
An anthropologist studies human development , including human origin, behaviour, and physical, social and cultural development.
What does a scientific expert do?
A scientific expert uses the science (especially chemistry and biology and scientific methods (DNA analysis) to provide evidence about such things as artefacts or human remains and check their authenticity.

A secondary source is something that was made after the time of the event.
What does a linguist do?
A linguist studies the nature and structure of language and how it has changed over time
