SCIENCE 2ND QUARTER: BIOMOLECULES Flashcards
1
Q
What are Carbohydrates?
A
- polymer of sugars linked together
- compounds composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (1 oxygen and 2 hydrogen atoms for each carbon one)
- energy source is the primary function
2
Q
What are the three types of carbohydrates?
A
- Monosaccharides
- Disaccharides
- Polysaccharides
3
Q
What are Monosaccharides?
A
- Glucose is the most common
- Fructose and Galactose are other examples.
4
Q
What are Disaccharides?
A
- 2 monosaccharides linked together
- Sucrose, Maltose, Lactose are examples
5
Q
What are Polysaccharides?
A
- longer carbohydrate molecules
- Glycogen is the most common example
6
Q
What is Glycogen?
A
- energy storage form of glucose in the liver and skeletal muscle
- when the body needs energy, glycogen is broken down into glucose
7
Q
What are Lipids?
A
- molecules with carbon and hydrogen
- fatty acids, glycerol, and other compounds
- The primary function is energy storage
8
Q
What are the three types of Lipids?
A
- Triglycerides
- Phospholipids
- Steroids
9
Q
What are Triglycerides?
A
- long-term energy storage
- glycerol backbone with 3 fatty acid tails
- can be saturated or unsaturated
10
Q
What are Phospholipids?
A
- hydrophilic head
- hydrophobic tails
- bilayer sheet
11
Q
What are Proteins?
A
- small carbon compounds
- used to build muscle
12
Q
What are Amino Acids?
A
- small compounds with carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur)
- all amino acids share the same general structure
13
Q
What are Nucleic Acids?
A
- complex macromolecules that store and transmit DNA
- smaller repeating units
