Q

Mixtures

A

Several pure substances combined
Can not be physically separated
Different amounts of each substance can be in the mixture
Like green salad easy to separate

Tie long hair back whenever you use a Bunsen burner
Tell your teacher immediately if you cut or burn yourself
Tie long hair back when heating of mixing substances
Tell you teacher immediately if you break any glassware of spill chemicals

Q

Lighting a Bunsen burner process

A

1)place Bunsen burner on safety mat
2)make sure gas is off (in line with tap)
3)connect gas hose to tap
4)close air hole
5)light match
6)turn on gas (hold over Bunsen burner while doing this)
If instructed turn in to blue flame

16

18
Q

What is an independent variable?

A

The factors that change

19
Q

What is a dependent variable?

A

The thing that changes depending on the independent variable

20
Q

What is a controlled variable?

A

A controlled variable is something that stays the same through the experiment

21
Q

Thermometer -meniscus reading

A

If the bump is facing up read from top of bump

If bump is facing down read from bottom of bump

22
Q

Chromatography

A

Used to separate two dyes from one another
The chromatography paper is drawn onto with texta or some type do dye
The paper tip is put into water
This causes the dyes to travel up the chromatography paper the more soluble moves further than the less soluble
This separates the dyes from each other

23
Q

Distillation

A

Used to seperation and collect liquid from a solution of a soluble solid
The solution is heated in a flask until the liquid boils then the vapour passes into a condenser where if is fooled and condensed to a liquid
The pure liquid is then collected in a beaker.

24
Q

Evaporation

A

Used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid

A solution is heated up eventually the liquid will evaporate leaving the solid behind

25
Q

Fractional distillation

A

Type of distillation used to seperate mixtures of liquids
Different liquids boil at different temperatures, when heated they boil and condensed at different times the apparatus has a fractioning column, this ensures that only the liquid boils at its boiling point will pass into the condenser

26
Q

Filtiration

A

Seperates insoluble solids from liquids

The solid stays on god filter paper an the liquid passes through into the beaker

27
Q

Magnetic seperation

A

When there are magnetically susceptible objects in a mixture. A magnet is held on top and all magnetic objects are attracted to the magnet therefore the magnetic objects have separated from the rest if the mixture

28
Q

Sedimentation and flotation

A

When water is added to a mixture all heavy materials sink to the bottom and light materials float on top.
