Science 2.1 Flashcards
pure substances
The same composition and cannot be broken down by physical properties
Element
A substance that can’t be broken down into smaller substances
mixtures
Composition isn’t fixed and takes on the properties of the things that make it up
Compound
A substance made from two or more simpler substances. Can be broken down into smaller substances.
heterogeneous
The parts are different so they are easy to distinguish
homogeneous
Evenly distributed and are hard to distinguish
Solution
The substance dissolves and homogeneous two or more types mixed tg
suspension
A heterogeneous mixture that separates and particles scatter in light
Colloid
particles are medium sized between solution and suspension. Heterogeneous and particles scatter in light.
Why are elements and compound classified as pure substances?
every sample of a given substance has the same properties because a substance has a fixed and uniform composition. an element has a fixed composition because it contains one type of atom. A compound always contains two or more elements joined in a fixed proportion.
how do mixtures differ from pure substances?
The properties of a mixture can vary because the composition of a mixture is not fixed
What is the main difference among solution, suspension and colloids?
based on the size and the largest particle, a mixture can be classified as a solution, a suspension or colloid
