Science 1.2 Flashcards
What is the goal of the scientific method?
The goal of any scientific method is to solve a problem or to better understand and observed event
Scientific method
An organized plan for collecting information and is also a systematic approach to understand a problem
observation
an observation is information you get from your five senses, and repeatable observations are facts
hypothesis
A proposed answer to a question. Could take years to come up with a hypothesis and experiment.
Types of variables
Independent variable– the variable I can control and adjust
Control experiment – an experiment in which only one variable is changed
responding variable – the amount of something and looked at for change
Scientific theory
A well tested explanation for a set of observations or results
Theory
A theory is a summary of related observations
Theories are never proven. They can become stronger by fact.
kinetic theory explains a wide range of observations, that all particles of matter are in constant motion
Scientific law
A statement that summarizes a pattern found in nature and the explanation that is provided by scientific theory
model
Representation of an object or event. Scientific models make it easier to understand things that might be too difficult to observe directly. If data shows that the model is wrong, the model is wrong.
Random facts to know
Scientific method starts in curiosity. Independent variable is usually on the X axis law is a fact of nature and one variable we test and models allow us to represent a system visual way to understand a complex idea.
