Science 2 1-18 Flashcards
What is a leaver
simple machine usually consisting of a long, rigid object that moves around a turning point when a force is applied
What do we mean a by first class leaver
A first class leaver is the lever with the fulcrum between the effort and the load
What are the three parts of a leaver
Effort load and fulcrum
What does the fulcrum mean
The point around which a lever turns
What does load mean
The resistance of motion that the lever works against
What does effort mean
force used to cause movement
Why are first class levers called force multiplayer
First-class levers are force multipliers because they ‘multiply’ your effort.
Name three examples of force multiplayers
A nutcracker, wheelbarrow and a shovel (they allow you to move a load with a small effort)
What do we mean by second class leaver
the load between the effort and the fulcrum
What is a mechanical advantage mean
And how do you calculate mechanical advantages
the ratio of the force produced by a machine
The Calculation of a mechanical advantage is the load divided by the effort
What sort of multiplayer is a second class leaver
A speed multiplayer
What Do we mean by third class leaver
the effort between the load and the fulcrum
What type of multipliers are third class leavers
Speed multiplayers because they are desined to move a small load quickly with a large effort
Name three examples of third class leavers
Hockey stick
Baseball bat
Arm
What type of leavers are many bones in you’re body
Bones in your body are levers.
These are the large bones in your arms and legs
