Preciouse Resourses Flashcards
What is mining
the process of removing mineral ore from the ground
What is a mineral ore
a substance that contains minerals of values, that can be obtained by mining
Examples of mineral ore
Mineral ore=Metal Bauxite=Aluminium. Galena=Lead
Sphalerite=Zinc. Hematite=Iron. Pentlandite=Nickel
Chalcopyrite=Copper
What is underground mining and open cut mining
Open cut mining-a method of mining mineral ores that are close to the surface
Underground mining- a method of mining mineral ores that are deep below the surface
Steps of extracting minerals from the ground
Concentration:The useful rock taken from the ground is a mixture of the useful mineral ore and unwanted sand
Reduction:A number of chemical reactions because the mineral ore is a pure substance
Purification:Most metals obtained from the reduction process still contain impurities.
What are the different energy of black coal and brown coal
Brown coal: a form of coal formed from peat compressed over millions of years
Black coal: a harder, drier form of coal than brown coal, formed from peat compressed over millions of years
How are fossil fuels formed
From remains of plants or animals
What are common types of fossil fuels
Coal,oil and natural gases
Why do people use non-renewable energy sources
Non renewable energy:something that can not replaced in a short time eg fossils fuel ,diamonds, fossils fuel such as coal,oil and natural gas . It can take thousands of years to grow back
How do fossil fuels contribute/impact global warming (know three reasons)
Global warming: the observed rise in the average near-surface temperature of the Earth
When fossil fuels are burned they release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
What is the greenhouse effect
Greenhouse effect: a natural effect of the Earth’s atmosphere trapping heat
What is renewable energy
Something you can replace in a short period of time
What is black water
Waste water eg toilet water (urine and fecieces)
What is grey water
Home water eg laundry, dish and shower water
How does distillation work
When a liquid mixture is heated, the liquid with the lower boiling point evaporates (becomes a vapor), leaving behind the liquid with the higher boiling point
