Science Flashcards
Emperical evidence
information obtained through observation and documentation of certain behavior and patterns or through an experiment.
Experiment
A test under controlled conditions that is made to demonstrate a known truth, examine the validity of a hypothesis, or determine the efficacy of something previously untried.
Investigation
a plan for asking questions and testing possible answers.
Tested (independent) variable
the variable you manipulate, control, or vary in an experimental study to explore its effects.
Outcome (dependent) variable
what changes as a result of the independent variable manipulation in experiments.
Controlled variable
ny variable that’s held constant in a research study.
Tested group
the group that receives the variable being tested in an experiment.
Control group
a group in the experiment which is not being tested
Hypothesis
an idea or proposition that can be tested by observations or experiments, about the natural world.
quantitative data
data that can be counted or measured in numerical values.
qualitative data
data representing information and concepts that are not represented by numbers.
observation
the action or process ofobservingsomething or someone carefully or in order to gain information. (using five senses usually)
Analysis
detailed examination of the elements or structure of something.
Replication
repeating a study’s procedure and observing whether the prior finding recurs. (repeated by another scientist/different person)
Repetition
To repeat an experiment to improve accuracy (same person)
