Property
a characteristic that belongs to a person or thing
Matter
anything that has mass and takes up space.
Substance
A single kind of matter that is pure and has a specific set of properties.
Physical property
a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it.
Chemical Property
A characteristic of a substance that decreases its ability to change into different substances.
Element
a pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means
Atom
the basic particle from which elements are made. The smallest particle of an element
Chemical bond
the force of attraction that holds two atoms together
Molecule
A neutral group of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.
Compound
A substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio.
Mixture
two or more substances that are together in the same place but their atom are not chemically bonded.
Heterogeneous mixtures
the parts of the mixtures are noticeably different from one another
Homogeneous mixture
the substances are so evenly distributed that it is difficult to distinguish one substance in the mixture from one another
Suspension
a heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time
